Die-cut masks for the P-51B kit in 1:32 scale from Revell. The set covers the framed glazing from two sides and adds a single mask for the national marking. That is the lowest number of insignia masks in this range.
Before the Normandy landings the Allied formations received an order which only the most senior knew about until the last moment. In the course of a single night alternating light and dark bands were painted on the wings and fuselages so that ships' crews and soldiers on the shore would recognize their own aircraft without hesitation. The work was done with rollers, brushes and rags, so the result was irregular and the overruns across riveted joints are clearly noticeable in period photographs. These are therefore not bands that should be sprayed entirely precisely on a model; on the contrary, their slight untidiness is part of the credibility.
The letter B denotes the form with the glazing divided by frames, that is before the teardrop canopy of the later batches came. It was on this version that the blown inset dome also appeared, which pilots called for because of the view. Quite a few of the machines escorting the bombing raids over Germany carry it.
A single insignia mask means the other marked places have to be covered another way. Before applying the mask, let the paint base mature for at least a day, otherwise the paint will tear off when it is peeled away. Wipe any adhesive residue off with a cloth lightly moistened with alcohol; that will not harm matured paint. And if you do tackle the bands, draw them rather from their outer edges inwards.
