A set of wet transfers in 1:32 scale with the markings of Vought Corsair fighters in the F4U-1A and F4U-1D versions as used by the Royal New Zealand Air Force. It is not a kit but a separate marking set. Wet transfers differ from ordinary decals in that the carrier film is removed once they have adhered to the surface — only the color layer is left on the model, which looks as if it had been sprayed on, with no glossy edge.
The Corsair was a single-engined carrier fighter with a characteristic inverted gull wing, which allowed a large propeller blade to be used with a reasonable landing gear height. The F4U-1A version brought a better view from the cockpit thanks to a raised seat and a modified canopy, while the F4U-1D was also adapted for attacks on ground targets. The RNZAF used Corsairs in the Pacific from land bases, and their markings therefore differ from those of US Navy machines.
The undercoat has to be smooth and glossy — any graininess will show through the thin layer of a transfer. Follow the manufacturer's instructions: a transfer is soaked like a decal, placed on the area and, once dry, the carrier film is carefully removed. The key is not to rush; the film is only taken off once the color layer has settled firmly and is dry, otherwise it tears. Work one element at a time and degrease the area beforehand. Because there is no protective layer once the film is off, transfers are sensitive to rubbing — clear coat the model with a thin layer of varnish once it is finished, and only then move on to bringing out the panel lines and to the weathering.
It is an accessory for a model, not a kit. The aircraft model, paints and clear coats are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
