Masking set for a large model of the most widespread version of the Spitfire. The cut handles the sliding and the fixed part of the glazing from both faces, and beside it lie two patterns for the circular insignia and decals.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Mk IX carried a rear-view mirror above the windscreen and a model builder runs into it sooner than expected. It sits exactly on the edge where the outer camouflage meets the interior shade of the cockpit, and as soon as the frame is painted only from outside, the mirror juts out above a mismatched area. Below it the whole inside of the cockpit is then visible.
And there is something to look at: the gray-green paint of the side walls, the round knob of the control column, the leather padding of the headrest. An inner mask is therefore not an extra but a precondition for the detail under the acrylic to read correctly. The thin frame of the sliding section can hardly be managed straight with hand-cut tape in a large scale.
The set carries a cut for the sliding and the fixed part of the glazing, each time separately for the view from outside and for the view from the cockpit. Beside them lie two patterns for the circular insignia and decals as well, with which the squadron code letters are completed. The parts are die-cut for the large model and cannot be used in smaller scales.
The Mk IX flew from Malta to Normandy and looked different in every theater. Anyone building a machine with camouflage of two shades above will appreciate that a mask can be lifted and reapplied during a correction. The order is simple: the interior first, then the glazing, and the top camouflage last.
Let the film rest for a day at room temperature before you apply it to cold acrylic. A cold surface lowers the tack and paint gets under the edge. Once it is lifted, check against the light whether any adhesive residue is left on the acrylic.
