A 1:32 decal sheet for the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXc; the subject is a machine operating in North Africa in 1943.
Responsibility details are not available.
The Spitfire Mk.IX came about as a quick answer to the German Focke-Wulf fighter, which in 1941 proved better over the Channel than the British machines of the day. An engine with a two-stage supercharger was fitted into the proven airframe and the result was an aircraft that held its performance even at great altitude. The letter c in the designation belongs to the universal wing, into which various combinations of machine guns and cannon could be mounted. In North Africa in 1943 these machines covered the Allied advance through Tunisia and fine sand left its mark on their finishes.
Only the geographical and time setting of the subject is documented for this sheet, that is North Africa and the year 1943, and not a list of individual machines. It is therefore better not to count on a full list of options and to take the sheet as an accessory focused on one environment. In exchange that makes it clear which scene it suits: desert camouflage, worn shades and the sunlit base of a diorama. Anyone building the Mediterranean theater will appreciate that this sheet does not mix the European and the African setting together but keeps to a single subject.
Desert machines are often built with pronounced weathering, and the order matters here. The decals belong on gloss varnish before dust, exhaust stains and chipped paint come into play, otherwise they would look improbably new. Once the film is dry, the whole model is unified with a matte top coat and only then is pigment work done. The model, paints and varnish are not in the package; the sheet is an accessory to a kit. Prepare a shallow dish of lukewarm water: a deeper bowl tempts you to let the paper float longer than is good for it and the glue washes out of it.
