About product

Vingtor Decals 1:32 Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IXc, No. 132 Wing RAF, North Weald

The item is a separate sheet of decals in the large 1:32 scale meant for a plastic model of the Spitfire Mk.IXc. The theme is the marking of the machines of No. 132 Wing RAF with its home base at North Weald. In 1:32 every piece of lettering and every insignia is markedly larger than in the more usual scales, so the quality of the printing and the register of the colors show a great deal in the result. The exact list of the individual machines and their codes is given in the instructions in the package.

The real subject

The Spitfire Mk.IX was an intermediate step that arose from fitting a two-stage supercharged Merlin engine into the airframe of the previous version. The letter c in the designation refers to the so-called universal wing, which allowed various combinations of armament. The recognition features of the nine are a longer nose, a four-blade propeller and a pair of radiators under the wing, one under each half. During the build it pays to check whether the kit chosen matches exactly this sub-version, because individual Mk.IXs differed in the shape of the cowling, the exhausts and the canopy.

Application tips

Large decals stand fewer mistakes than small ones, so plan the order beforehand. Varnish the base with gloss varnish and let it cure for at least a day. Slide the motif off the backing paper onto an area dampened beforehand, not a dry one, or it will grip before you can align it. Force air bubbles out with a soft rubber squeegee or a cotton bud from the middle to the edges; on pronounced engraved lines it helps to pierce the decal with a needle and dampen it again with a setting solution. Once everything is dry, even the surface out with varnish, so that the edges of the carrier disappear.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of large Spitfire models in 1:32 scale
  • Anyone interested in British fighter aviation of the Second World War
  • Modelers who want a less usual marking for their model
  • More experienced builders who have no trouble with large-area decals

This is a separate set of decals. The model, paints and varnish are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. You are buying a separate sheet of decals in 1:32 scale; the kit has to be bought separately.

The number of schemes and a survey of the individual machines are given in the instructions enclosed in the package.

The set is listed for the Mk.IXc version. On other sub-versions neither the size nor the placing of the lettering need fit, so we recommend weighing that before buying.

A large motif grips on dry varnish before you can align it, and it tears when you try to move it. A thin film of water gives time to straighten it.
