The sheet in 1:32 scale brings together two different versions of the Spitfire. The first is machine MK210 in the Mk IXc version, on which a test unit at Wright Field examined increased range in 1944. The second subject is a Mk VIII with the fuselage number MT841 and the name Pauline, which served with British No. 2 Squadron at Kohat in India in January 1946.
Responsibility details are not available.
This sheet is unusual in offering, in one package, Spitfires of two different stages of development and from utterly different surroundings. One flew as a test machine in North America, the other finished its service with a squadron in the northwest of India. Both subjects are nevertheless joined by the same 1:32 scale.
The first machine is the Mk IXc with the fuselage number MK210 and the name Tolly Hello, tested by the chief test pilot, Lieutenant Colonel Gustav Lundquist, at the test section at Wright Field in 1944. This was an experimental conversion for long routes: under the wings it carried Mustang-type tanks of sixty-two gallons, in the rear fuselage it had an added tank of forty-three gallons, and in each wing a flexible tank of sixteen and a half gallons as well. The machine was moved to the United States by air via Iceland.
The second subject is a Mk VIII with the number MT841 and the name Pauline. It came to No. 2 Squadron on January 20, 1946 and was given its name by the pilot Pat Callaghan. Its end was a sad one: on January 29, 1947 an oil leak appeared in the circuit over the airfield, the engine caught fire and the pilot belly-landed. The aircraft was written off after the landing.
The Mk VIII and the Mk IX came about shortly after one another as an answer to the same problem, that is, to more powerful German fighters. The Mk VIII received a strengthened airframe and was built from the start as a new aircraft, whereas the Mk IX came about by a quicker route, through the conversion of an older airframe. Outwardly they differ in details around the radiators and the tail surfaces, so before you reach for the sheet, check which of the versions your kit represents.
The markings are printed on a backing that releases in lukewarm water. The kits of the two versions themselves and the shades for the finish are not part of the package.
