Self-adhesive masks for painting the road wheels of the heavy Soviet 2S3 self-propelled howitzer in 1:35 scale. The set holds no parts of the model — its task is to mark out the area of the rubber tire band on the wheel so it can be sprayed separately and with the same result on every wheel. The masks are cut for the kit from Trumpeter; the wheels of another kit may have a different diameter, so check the match.
Unlike the lighter 2S1, which has no return rollers, the 2S3 stands on a heavy tracked chassis with six road wheels on each side and with return rollers in the upper part. The drive sprocket is at the front, the idler wheel at the rear. For painting that means two different sizes of rubber circumference: large road wheels and much smaller rollers, on which the strip of rubber is so narrow that a hand brush either overruns it or misses it entirely. The vehicle is tall and massive and the running gear stays essentially exposed, so the eye settles on it in the view from the side as one continuous row.
A row of six wheels side by side is the ideal setting for the mistake known as progressive drift: each wheel is lined slightly differently from the one before, and the difference between the first and the last is then obvious. The second common mistake is painting the wheels only once they are seated on the hull — there is little room between and above them and neither a brush nor an airbrush gets in there, so the inner faces stay in the hull color. The third is overlooking the rollers: the modeler deals with the large wheels and leaves the small rollers in one color, because they are not visible from a distance. A mask unifies the circumference on every wheel regardless of its order or its size. It is stuck to a clean, degreased and preferably already primed surface and is lifted off while the paint has flashed off.
