About product

Masks for spraying M113 camouflage in 1:35 scale, scheme 1 (JsWork)

These are not masks for the glazing and they are not decals. They are cut masks that are laid onto a sprayed base shade, and the second color of the camouflage pattern is applied with an airbrush over them. The mask solves the greatest weakness of hand work: repeatability. The shape of the patches matches a prepared scheme and is the same on both sides and on the roof of the vehicle, which would be hard to hold to freehand. This version contains the first of the schemes offered; the second is sold separately.

The real subject

The M113 is an American tracked armored personnel carrier introduced in the early 1960s. It has a welded hull of aluminum alloy, which makes it substantially lighter than steel vehicles, and in many armies it served or still serves in dozens of derived versions. The large flat surfaces of the hull make the carrier a rewarding subject for multi-color camouflage, and at the same time they mean that for the modeler every inaccuracy in the spraying is noticed at once.

Usage tips

Let the base shade cure thoroughly, otherwise it will peel away as the mask is removed. Lay the mask on the model and, where needed, hold it lightly with your fingers or with masking putty, but do not press it hard into the surface. The sharpness of the transition follows the distance of the mask from the surface: a mask lying flat gives a hard edge, one lifted a millimeter or two gives the soft transition typical of freehand spraying. Spray at low pressure and in thin coats straight at the surface, because spraying at an angle creeps under the edge. Take the mask off right after spraying and wipe the paint off it.

Who the masks are for

  • modelers building the M113 and its variants in 1:35 scale
  • builders who do not trust themselves to draw camouflage freehand
  • modelers who want the pattern symmetrical on both sides of the vehicle
  • anyone after a repeatable result across several vehicles built

The package contains masks only. The model, paints and an airbrush are not part of the delivery, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. These are masks for spraying the camouflage pattern onto the hull of the vehicle, a different type of product from masks for the glazing.

Pack the mask up and hold it a millimeter or two above the surface. The paint then drifts slightly under the edge and the edge will be blurred as with freehand spraying.

With careful handling, yes. Clean it after every spraying so that no layer of dried paint builds up on the edges, which would spoil the shape of the edge.

The name gives only the sequential designation of the scheme. It is the first of two patterns the manufacturer offers for the M113.
