About product

A barrel of the British 17-pounder anti-tank gun Mk.I in 1:35 - Aber

A turned metal barrel in 1:35 scale from the Polish manufacturer Aber. It matches the British 17-pounder anti-tank gun in the Mk.I version with its characteristic ball-shaped muzzle brake. This is not a model of a gun but a detail accessory: the metal part replaces the plastic barrel, keeps perfect straightness and has a hollow muzzle, which with a muzzle brake of this shape is clearly visible.

The real subject

The 17-pounder anti-tank gun of 76.2 mm was the most powerful British anti-tank weapon of the Second World War. It entered service in 1942 and thanks to its high muzzle velocity it coped even with well-armored targets. Besides the towed carriage it also found its way into the turrets of tanks, where it is known mainly from the Sherman Firefly version, and into tank destroyers. Early pieces carried a muzzle brake of a ball shape, which later production replaced with another form; it is by this very detail that a vehicle or a gun can be placed in time.

Building and painting tips

Cut off the plastic barrel at the root, clean out the opening in the mantlet or the shield and push the metal part home. Degrease the metal with alcohol before gluing and roughen the mating surfaces lightly; it is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Lay a base coat meant for metals onto the metal parts, or the paint will hold poorly. The hollow muzzle stands out when you darken it lightly from inside with a soot shade. The ball-shaped muzzle brake is a striking element of shape: leave it clean, with no remains of glue, and once painted emphasize its outline with a light dry brush.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers of British vehicles of the Second World War in 1:35 scale
  • Builders of towed anti-tank guns and of dioramas with artillery
  • More experienced modelers working with metal accessories
  • Collectors who upgrade plastic kits

This is a detail accessory, not a complete model. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

No, it is a detail accessory: a turned metal barrel as a replacement for the plastic part.

A caliber of 76.2 mm; the designation by the weight of the shell in pounds is a British convention of the period.

Early pieces had a ball-shaped muzzle brake, later ones another form. A build is placed in time by it.

With cyanoacrylate glue (super glue); degrease the surfaces and roughen them lightly.
