About product

Soviet reconnaissance troops of 1941 to 1945 in 1:35 scale (Rado Miniatures)

A set of resin figures in 1:35 scale from Rado Miniatures, from the Behind enemy lines range. According to the name these are Soviet reconnaissance troops, the razvedchiki, in the period from 1941 to 1945. It is not a vehicle kit but a set of figures for dioramas and vignettes in the same scale. The plural in the name corresponds to a multi-figure set.

How reconnaissance figures differ from ordinary infantry

Reconnaissance figures are posed differently from rank-and-file infantry beside a vehicle. They are not standing but moving: crouched, heads low and weapons ready. That has a practical consequence for the builder. A group like this needs no vehicle to complete it; it carries a story on its own and works even as a stand-alone vignette on a small base. The second difference lies in the clothing. Camouflage oversuits with an irregular pattern break up the silhouette and are painted in a completely different way from a plain uniform: the pattern must not be drawn like a flat print but has to follow the folds and shadows of the cloth, or the figure loses its sense of volume.

Building and painting tips

Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw and sand wet with respiratory protection. Spray on a primer. Build the camouflage pattern in three steps: first an overall base tone, then soft patches of irregular shape and finally lightening of the edges and raised areas to bring the volume back. Do not make the patches the same size or space them evenly. Put the shadows into the folds with a thin glaze in a darker tone of the base color, not with black. Tone the footwear and the lower part of the trousers down with dust pigment, which visually ties the figure to the ground. A matte varnish at the end.

FAQ

The name is in the plural and corresponds to a multi-figure set; check the contents before buying.

You do not. Figures in motion carry a story on their own and work well as a stand-alone vignette on a small base.

Draw the pattern only once the base tone is finished and immediately afterwards lighten the raised areas and the edges of the folds. Do not make the patches the same size and do not space them regularly.

Working with resin and a camouflage pattern are a step more demanding than a plastic figure in a single-color uniform. With some basic experience of painting figures it is manageable.
