An unassembled plastic kit of the M48 AVLB bridgelayer tank, that is, an engineer vehicle built on the chassis of the American M48 tank in the A2 version. The German designation Brückenlegepanzer in the name matches the role of the machine — it carries and lays a folding bridge. It is a sizable and visually unusual model, because the dominant feature in place of a turret is the folded bridge section.
AVLB is the abbreviation for armored vehicle-launched bridge. It comes about by converting the chassis of a battle tank: the turret is removed, a hydraulic mechanism takes its place and a scissor bridge is laid on the hull, carried folded while under way and unfolded on the spot across an obstacle. The advantage is that the bridging is managed by a machine that moves in the same terrain and at the same speed as the unit it accompanies, and is itself armored while doing so. The version on the M48 chassis served with the US Army and with other users who operated this type of tank.
Finish and paint the running gear and the lower hull before you fit the bridge structure — once it is on, the wheels and tracks are hard to reach. The bridge section has many long straight edges, so while gluing, watch the squareness and let the glue harden properly before you handle the part. Apply the primer with an airbrush, so that it gets under the bridge structure as well. For weathering, a dark wash in the engravings, fine abrasion of the edges and dust pigments on the lower parts and on the surfaces people climb onto the hull by all come in handy.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
