An injection-molded plastic kit of the British Centurion tank in the Mk.5 version in 1:35 scale. The tooling is by Amusing Hobby, and that is an important distinction: more than one maker tools a kit of the Centurion Mk.5, and they are two different kits with a different breakdown of parts. The number of parts, the extent of the decal sheet and the presence of photo-etched parts are stated on the box of the kit.
The Centurion is a British tank whose development began at the end of the Second World War, though it only entered regular service afterwards. It became the first British machine to combine heavy armor, an accurate gun and adequate mobility in one balanced design, and it is therefore regarded as the forerunner of the main battle tank category. It was powered by the Rolls-Royce Meteor V12, derived from the Merlin aero engine, and the running gear rested on Horstmann suspension with horizontal springs mounted outside the hull and with side armor plates. The Mk.5 version carried an 84 mm gun, known as the 20-pounder, and compared with the earlier batches it received a coaxial Browning machine gun. The Centurion served with the British Army and with many other users and saw action in several postwar conflicts; the chassis was later used for engineer and recovery vehicles as well.
Work from the running gear up. Finish and weather the wheels, the spring units and the tracks before the side plates go on, because afterwards you cannot reach them. Run liquid plastic cement into the seams between the hull parts and sand the excess back once dry. Apply a primer before painting; it evens out the surface and reveals any flaws. Spray the basic British green with an airbrush in two tones, so that the large flat areas of the hull do not look uniform. Then come gloss varnish, decals, softener and varnish again. Build the weathering up in layers: first a dark wash into the recesses and around the rivets, then a dry brush on the edges and finally dust and mud pigments from the bottom upward. The metal parts of the gun and the tow cables can be suggested with graphite or with a metallic pigment.
