A photo-etched detail set from the Czech maker Eduard for a model of the heavy tank destroyer Sd.Kfz. 184 Elefant in 1:35 scale. The set is intended to replace and complete the plastic parts with thin photo-etched sheet — typically elements that cannot be made in a realistic thickness in injection-molded plastic. Please note that this is not a kit of the vehicle: the plastic model has to be obtained separately.
The Sd.Kfz. 184 was a heavy tank destroyer with a fixed superstructure mounted at the rear of the hull. The main armament was an 8.8 cm gun with a long barrel, housed in the front wall of the superstructure. The vehicle was created by converting the chassis of an unsuccessful heavy tank prototype and had an unusual gasoline-electric drive system, in which combustion engines drove generators and only those drove electric motors at the drive sprockets. Its characteristic features are thick frontal armor plates, a tall superstructure and a markedly restricted view from the fighting compartment.
Separate the photo-etched parts with a scalpel on a glass or metal surface, not with side cutters. Degrease the sheet before gluing, otherwise cyanoacrylate glue will not hold. Bend the fenders and grilles in a bender; with long bends, work in sections so that the sheet does not ripple. On a vehicle of this type photo-etched parts stand out mainly where the thickness of the material is visible — on edges, on covers and on screens. Once they are glued on, do not forget a primer for metals, otherwise the paint holds badly on smooth sheet. Do the weathering only on the finished surface; soot and dust effects catch nicely in precisely these photo-etched structures.
This is an accessory set, not a kit. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
