About product

Wehrmacht water containers, Nowack Bautzen, 1943 pattern, open - 1:35, ten pieces

The package holds ten miniatures of the German standard twenty-liter water container in 1:35 scale, in the version with the closure flipped open and with the pressed mark of the Nowack works of Bautzen, after the pattern of 1943. It is not a model of a vehicle and not a kit: it is an accessory with which finished vehicles, trucks, trailers and diorama scenes are fitted out.

The real subject

The standard sheet metal container of the German army had the same shape and the same system of three handles as the can for fuel, but it served to carry drinking and utility water. So that crews did not confuse the two containers, they were told apart on the outside: water containers carried the lettering Wasser and in practice were completed with a white cross on the side, and the closure had a wider neck for filling and cleaning. The shape with the pressed crosses on the sides stiffened the container and at the same time left room for the contents to expand in frost. The pressing works marked their products with their own signs, so individual versions are told apart today precisely by the mark and the year of the pattern.

Use, building and painting

Separate the parts carefully with a sharp scalpel or cutting pliers and sand the traces of the cut with fine sandpaper. If they are resin or 3D printed parts, wash them before painting in lukewarm water with dish soap so that the remains of mold release agent disappear, and glue them with super glue; injection-molded plastic takes ordinary thin modeling cement. After the primer and the color of the vehicle it pays to bring the surface to life with a dark wash and a dry brush, so that the pressed crosses stand out. The open version suits scenes with water being topped up, field kitchens and washstands, where a container stands with its closure open.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers building German Second World War vehicles in 1:35 scale.
  • Makers of dioramas and vignettes: a supply point, a field kitchen, a crew at rest.
  • Collectors who tell the individual pressing works and container patterns apart.
  • Anyone who needs a larger number of identical containers at once.

The accessory is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. It is a separate fitting, a set of small containers that you add to a model already built or to a diorama.

According to the name, ten pieces. Further details of the contents are stated on the box of the set.

The shape is very similar, but this container served for water. In practice it was told apart by lettering and a white cross; on a model you solve that with paint and decals.

It is not tied to one particular kit. What matters is the 1:35 scale and the place where you put the containers: holders, the bed or the ground of a diorama.
