A photo-etched detail set from the Polish maker Aber in 1:35 scale. It replaces the grilles above the engine compartment of the British Cromwell Mk.IV cruiser tank and of its relative, the Centaur C.S. Mk.IV. Photo-etched sheet is an order of magnitude thinner than injected plastic, so after the swap the grille genuinely lets light through and does not look like a solid panel with an engraved pattern. This is not a kit of the tank but an accessory for a part-built model.
Both the Cromwell and the Centaur have their cooling handled by large-area grilles on the top plate of the rear of the hull. On the model these are surfaces that everyone looks at from above, and that is exactly where injected plastic loses: the wall thickness does not allow the openings to go all the way through. A photo-etched replacement solves this and opens a view into the shadow under the grille. The effect is heightened further if you paint the space beneath it dark or add a suggested radiator in there.
Nip the parts off the fret with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface, do not twist them out. Make the bends over a metal ruler or in a bending tool so that the edge is sharp. Trim off the original plastic grille pattern and sand the surface flat. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue applied in a minimal amount, because any excess runs into the openings and seals them. Before painting, degrease the etch and use a primer, ideally one intended for metal; without it the paint holds poorly on smooth brass. Finally knock back the sheen with matte clear coat and add dust between the fins.
The set is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Before buying, check that the etch fits the kit you are building.
