A printed paper sheet for dioramas in 1:35 scale. It ranks among the accessories for a scene: the motifs are cut out of the sheet and glued onto a surface as a miniature prop. It is not a kit and it is not a decal lifted off a backing film either, so it is worked differently – with scissors, a scalpel and glue, not with water.
With paper accessories, cleanliness of the trim and the thickness of the material are what count. In 1:35 scale paper always has a slightly oversized thickness, so it pays to bevel the edge lightly with a piece of fine abrasive paper once cut and to tone the white break with paint. With flags it especially helps when a motif is not glued flat but slightly waved – the eye then does not register the thickness of the paper and the scene looks natural.
A flag works as an anchor for the eye, so place it where the viewer of a scene is meant to look first: on a pole by a building, on a post, by a gate, on a vehicle. It is glued with PVA glue applied in a thin layer; it is folded over wire or thread and left to finish drying in the shape formed. Once dry, aging comes next – sand the edges gently, put a thinned wash into the folds, add dry pigment depending on whether the scene stands in dust or in rain. Matte clear coat at the end evens out the difference between the sheen of the printing and the surrounding materials.
