A set of masks for painting the road wheels of the Israeli Nagmachon heavy armored personnel carrier in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit or a replacement part, but a modeling aid: the mask covers the wheel rim, so you spray the rubber tire band on its own and the transition between the tire band and the rim comes out sharp with no lining by brush. The set is cut for the Nagmachon kit from Tiger Model; the wheels of other kits of the same vehicle may have a different diameter, so check the match before ordering.
The Nagmachon builds on the hull of the British Centurion and takes over its Horstmann suspension with it. The road wheels are therefore not sprung individually on torsion bars but grouped in pairs into external bogies. There are plenty of them on each side and they have a smaller diameter than the wheels of postwar tanks with torsion bar suspension: instead of a few large discs you are dealing with a row of small rings on which a hand-drawn brush line can hardly be kept concentric. Heavy side armor is added to that, which covers much of the underside of the vehicle. It does not make the work easier, though — a narrow strip of wheels is visible under the plate and it is precisely there that every overrun of paint or blurred tire band edge is immediately conspicuous.
Transfer the masks with tweezers that have fine, well matched tips; lift a mask by its edge and lay it on the wheel without pressing, and only then seat it with a skewer. On wheels of this diameter concentricity is checked better by eye through a bench or head magnifier with its own lighting than on a camera. Spike the wheels on toothpicks pushed into a piece of extruded polystyrene, so you do not have to move them with your fingers while spraying. With a larger number of wheels it pays to line them up in a foam pad in the order of assembly and to keep that order even once the masks are off. Apply the paint in thin coats — a heavy coat builds a ridge at the edge of the mask that shows as a visible edge once it is lifted.
