The industrial cable drum in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer MAiM is one of those props everyone knows from real building sites and storage yards, and that is exactly why it works in a diorama at once. A large cable reel is a bold, easily read object that fills an empty spot in a scene without looking random. It is supplied as an unpainted casting to be cleaned up and painted.
A cable drum suits a building site, a dug-up street, a factory yard, a warehouse or a harbor. Laid flat it serves as an improvised table for soldiers or workers, a motif known from real building sites. In the rubble of an urban scene it underlines the chaos of randomly scattered material. The 1:35 scale sits well with military vehicles and civilian figures alike, and thanks to its neutral character the drum also holds up beside modern and post-apocalyptic scenes.
Paint wooden drums with the technique of a light base and a darker wash drawn out in the direction of the grain, with the edges pulled out using a dry brush. Alternatively choose an industrial look with a painted finish, because a muted red or blue with chipping looks believable. Do not forget a dusting of pigments at ground level and traces of handling around the rim, where the drum is rolled.
The accessory is supplied as an unpainted casting to be cleaned up and painted. Paints and glue are not included in the package.
