It is not a kit or a decal: it is a printed sheet with the leaves of the tropical plant Piper peltatum, a species from Central America with large rounded leaves. It is precisely this type of leaf that makes a scene tropical, and you will not find it in dry scatter or among the leaves of Central European trees.
A waterslide decal needs a smooth clear-coated surface and blends with the undercoat once stuck down. A printed leaf, on the contrary, is a separate physical object: it has thickness, casts a shadow and can be bent, which is the key thing on large-leaved tropical plants. Cut it out with a scalpel with a fresh blade on a cutting mat, and on large leaves run the cut in one continuous stroke along the outline; shorter interrupted strokes leave visible teeth.
Never leave a large leaf flat. Curve it along the central vein and roll the edges slightly downward; a brief run over the edge of a pair of tweezers or wrapping it around the round handle of a brush will help. Glue the leaves to wire or drawn stems with a small drop of PVA or matte glue, as super glue stains a print. Darken the white cut edge around the perimeter with a marker or a thin layer of acrylic in the shade of the leaf. Finally spray everything with matte clear coat from a distance – it strengthens the paper and takes the sheen off the print. Dry and yellowed leaves at the foot of the plant will add credibility to a scene.
