The cast hull makes the M4A1 version the most easily recognized Sherman. The rounded shapes came out of the steelworks in one piece instead of being welded up from plates, and although production was more demanding, assembly could be speeded up that way. The first examples appeared in North Africa with British units; later production machines with the 76 mm gun fought in France. The running gear stayed the same as on the welded versions and painting it goes exactly the same way. The cast hull also often differs in surface texture, so it pays to compare the roughness of the armor with a period photograph.
Applying the cutouts is a short but irreversible step: it has to come after the base shade and before the tracks are fitted. The suspension bogies are therefore glued to the hull only once the wheels are finished, otherwise the builder shuts off his own access to the inner tires. Anyone building a diorama with the vehicle sunk into the ground can leave the lower row out and mask only the visible half. The time saved comes in handy for the terrain.
The white stars and tactical markings are applied to the surfaces of the hull, so they do not get in the way of the running gear and the painting phase can run independently. Dust applied at the end softens the sharpness of the transition, so it is better to have the edge too clean than smeared. Slight damage to a tire is repaired by laying a leftover disc on it and spraying the spot.
