Weapon cases play a different role in a scene from ordinary crates: they give away at once what armament is around or is being issued. They suit issue points and stores, the bed of a vehicle, a resting crew or the inside of a shelter. Pair one with an open lid and the weapon laid out beside it and you create a situation the viewer understands, even with only one or two figures standing around. Because it is an industrially made container, it also takes repetition: several identical pieces stacked up look fine. In a stack, offset and turn them slightly; a perfectly aligned pile looks lifeless.
Clean and degrease the parts, then lay down a primer appropriate to the material in the package. Paint the shell flat, and the latches, hinges and handles a tone darker with a hint of metal. A wash in the ribs and grooves will give the surface depth, and careful lifting of the edges with a dry brush will bring out the shape. Keep the lettering and markings on the lid restrained; at this scale oversized lettering looks distracting. Finish by adding dust with pigment on the lower edge and light scuffing on the corners.
