A photo-etched add-on set from Voyager Model for a model of the armored variant of the American HMMWV cross-country vehicle designated M1114 in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit: these are brass panels of add-on armor, which are mounted on the vehicle at a distance from the body, and the related clamps. The configuration is universal, and use on models of this variant in that scale is reckoned with.
The M1114 is the armored variant of the HMMWV light tactical vehicle, in which the crew compartment is protected by an armored cab. On overseas operations further protection kits were fitted to the vehicles, among them panels attached with a gap from the original body. The standoff matters: the gap between the outer panel and the wall of the vehicle damps the effect of splinters and lowers the risk of direct penetration. On a model these panels form a prominent layer that changes the shape of the sides and the doors.
The most important thing is to keep the standoff of the panels the same over the whole area, because it is precisely the gap that makes standoff armor readable. Help yourself with spacers cut from a strip of plastic of the same thickness, fix a panel at one corner first, check the gap all the way round and only then finish the joint. Glue the panels on only after the body is base-painted, so that a continuous finish lies beneath them; the gap between the panel and the wall can then be sprayed from the side. Degrease the metal parts and spray them with a base. Weathering on add-on armor is done sparingly: dust in the gaps, slight wear of the paint on the edges of the panels and around the clamps, where the crew boards and equipment rubs. Avoid pronounced rust, because modern vehicles in service do not usually rust conspicuously.
The set is unassembled and unpainted. The model of the vehicle, the glue and the paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
