This figure of an old beggar in 1:35 scale from the manufacturer MAiM is one of those figures that give a diorama emotion. Where soldiers and vehicles make up the action, it is a civilian figure sitting by a wall that tells what war or a crisis means for ordinary people. The figure is supplied unpainted, as a casting to be cleaned up and painted, which leaves you full control over the expression of the finished scene.
The figure of an old man suits a wide span of subjects: an urban scene of the Second World War, postwar rubble, a modern street or a post-apocalyptic world. Place it at the corner of a building, on the steps of a church or beside a passing column, because the contrast between vehicles and a helpless figure is a tried and tested compositional move. The 1:35 scale matches the standard of military figures and vehicles.
First wash the casting clean of mold release residue, deburr the marks left by casting and stick it onto a working block. Prime it, ideally in two thin coats. Build the skin from acrylic layers from shadow to highlight, or use oil paints for the smooth transitions of a wrinkled face. Worn clothing asks for muted, dirty tones, and a final pigment in the color of dust will link the figure to its base.
The figure is supplied unpainted and unassembled, meant to be deburred, primed and painted. Paints are not included in the package.
