This is neither a kit nor a finished plant, but modeling material. The photo-etched brass fret holds palm leaves with etched ribs and slit leaflets, which once shaped and painted look like real palm fronds. The set is marked as the first part of a range, and the manufacturer adds further variants with different leaf shapes. The manufacturer is the Polish firm Aber, a specialist in photo-etched and turned metal accessories for modelers.
Palms are a characteristic feature of scenes from North Africa, the Middle East and the Mediterranean, and of Pacific and Asian battlefields. It is the crown of a palm that tends to be the weakest link in a diorama, because ordinary plastic leaves are too thick and too flat. Photo-etched brass allows a thin leaf with a sharp edge that can be bent into a natural droop. The leaves are mounted on a trunk of your own making and completed with dry lower fronds for a more believable look.
Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel so that the fine leaflets do not break. Bend a leaf over a soft surface, then open the individual leaflets with blunt tweezers into an irregular shape. Degrease the photo-etched parts before painting and lay down a primer for metal. A medium green forms the base; add a lighter tone on the tips, and on the lower fronds ocher and brown for dried ends. An airbrush gives a smooth transition, while a brush brings out the rib of a leaf. The crown is glued with cyanoacrylate glue and the joints are masked with the texture of the trunk.
The accessory is supplied as a photo-etched brass fret, unpainted. The trunk, the ground, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
