A plastic kit of the American aircraft carrier USS Yorktown with the hull number CV-5 in 1:700 scale from the South Korean brand Academy. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. The 1:700 scale is the most common one for ship models: even a large aircraft carrier stays a reasonable size in it and fits an ordinary display cabinet, and it is well served by photo-etched detail sets and wooden decks.
Yorktown was the first ship of the class that bears her name and entered service in 1937. She was designed as a carrier from the outset, with a roomy flight deck, an island superstructure on the starboard side and elevators linking the hangar with the deck. She took part in the action in the Coral Sea, where she was damaged, and after a very quick repair she sailed for Midway, where she was lost to hits in June 1942. It is exactly this link with both battles that made her one of the most frequently modeled American carriers.
With ship models it pays to work from the hull and the deck: first glue and sand the hull joints, and only then fit the superstructures and the small equipment. The flight deck is usually painted differently from the sides of the hull, so plan the order of spraying and masking in advance. Railings, nets and cranes are among the most vulnerable parts, so if you are adding photo-etched detail, leave it until the end of the build. Paint the small aircraft for the deck separately and glue them on with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). The finished model looks good on a wooden base or on a sea surface made from acrylic paste.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
