A set of masks for the road wheels of the German Panther medium tank, version D, in 1:35 scale, cut for the kit from Takom. This is not a model or a replacement part. Panther D masks are cut for the kits of other manufacturers in parallel — the items differ precisely in the target kit and are not interchangeable, because the wheels of the individual kits have different dimensions and a different rim layout.
The road wheel of the Panther is large, solid and edged around its circumference with a fairly narrow rubber tire band. The rim carries a ring of bolts around the circumference and a pronounced hub in the middle — those are three concentric circles of detail on one wheel, and a mask tidies up the largest of them for you, so the other two can be lifted out with a dry brush or a wash. The wheels sit interleaved in several planes, so there are markedly more of them on the vehicle than you will eventually see; even so they all have to be painted, and above all painted the same, because an uneven shade shows through the overlapping layers as a smear. The interleaved arrangement also means that the tire bands have to be finished before the wheels go onto the hull.
On a vehicle with this many wheels it pays to build a simple stand: push a row of skewers into a board of extruded polystyrene or into a block of modeling putty and spike one wheel on each. You then have the whole set side by side, spray them in one pass of the airbrush and can be sure they received the same number of coats. Pick the masks off the sheet with a needle and transfer them with tweezers; keep the tweezer tips fine and well matched, or you will drop a mask in the wrong place while transferring it. Before spraying, press the edge of the mask down with a blunt toothpick and check the whole row through a magnifier with lighting from the side. Keep the waste grid of the sheet on the bench until the end — it makes it easy to tell how many masks you have not used yet. Lift the masks off at a slant across the face of the wheel, not straight up.
