A photo-etched set from the Czech manufacturer Eduard aimed at the side armor skirts, in German Schürzen, of the model of the medium tank Pz.Kpfw.V Panther in the Ausf.G version in 1:35 scale. These plates are among the parts where the difference between plastic and metal shows most, because in reality they are thin sheet hung on a rail. The set is an aftermarket accessory, not a kit.
The side plates were hung along the hull above the running gear as added protection for the sides. They were made of thin sheet and in service they were easily deformed, worked loose or went missing altogether. That is exactly why they are rewarding for a modeler: they allow a model to be individualized with bent, missing or crookedly hanging pieces, which lends it credibility far more than a perfectly straight row in plastic.
Separate the plates with a scalpel and level the edges left by the tabs with a file so that they are not jagged. Form the deformations carefully over a rounded object, not with a sharp bend; real sheet bends in a smooth curve. Consider which parts you will leave missing and decide before you start painting. It is bonded with super glue, and on the mountings apply the glue in the smallest possible amount. Degrease the metal and spray it with primer. When adding patina, let dust and mud settle on the lower edges of the plates with pigments and suggest bare metal on the worn edges, because that is where the finish rubbed off most.
This is an accessory, not a kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
