A set of injection-molded plastic figures in 1:35 scale from the Taiwanese brand Freedom Model Kits. The abbreviation ROCA in the name denotes the ground forces of the Republic of China, that is, the army of Taiwan, and the figures represent an armored vehicle crew in contemporary gear. It is not a vehicle kit: the figures serve to bring a finished model or a diorama to life, where they add scale and a story.
An armored vehicle without a crew looks static in a display case and a viewer judges its size less easily. Figures in the turret hatches or beside the vehicle change that at once: they add movement to the scene and anchor it in a particular army and period. Crew figures can moreover be used on vehicles from other manufacturers as well, as long as the scale and the period match.
Snip the parts off with nippers and sand the parting seams carefully: on figures the seams show most on the face and the sleeves. Glue with thin cement for plastic and fill any gaps in the shoulder joints with putty. Apply a primer before painting, ideally a light gray one. Start the uniforms from a base shade, lighten the tops of the folds and deepen the shadows with a thin wash; build the skin up in layers from a darker base to lighter transitions. Try seating the figure in a hatch dry before gluing: often the position of the arms has to be adjusted or the lower part of the body shortened for the figure to sit naturally.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints, a vehicle and accessories are not included in the package.
