A masking set for painting the road wheels of the Russian T-90A tank and of the tank support fighting vehicle known as the Terminator. Both vehicles stand on a related chassis, which is why the set is shared. This is not a model or a set of extra parts: the masks cover the rim of the wheel so that the rubber tire band can be sprayed with a sharp edge. The set is cut for the kits from Meng.
The chassis derived from the T-72 family carries six large road wheels per side with a pronounced rubber tire band and a pressed rim with holes, supplemented by return rollers. The wheels are large in diameter, so the tire band is long and any hesitation with a brush creates a visible wave on it. Something else is fundamental, though: these vehicles are built with side armor skirts and with rubber skirts at the front. Depending on how you place the skirts on the model, either only the lower sliver of the wheels is left visible, or practically the whole wheel. The Terminator is also often built in a configuration where the running gear is more conspicuous than on the tank. The decision about the skirts therefore directly determines how much work on the wheels is worth doing.
It is precisely with these subjects that the placing of the step is crucial. The side skirts are glued to the hull, and once they are seated you cannot reach the wheels properly with an airbrush or a brush. Paint the wheels and close the masking step out, therefore, before the skirts go on the model — that is, after the base coat on the hull and before the sides are finished. Only then fit the wheels to the arms, add the skirts and the tracks last. Anyone who glues the skirts on prematurely will be finishing the tire bands with tweezers through a slit.
