The Scammell Pioneer is a British heavy tractor that appeared before the Second World War and served throughout it. It was built for hard work off the road and you can recognize it by its tall cowled engine and its massive wheels. The designation R100 belongs to the artillery tractor version, that is the machine that towed a heavy gun together with its crew and ammunition.
Stencil markings are the small technical inscriptions and marks that the real vehicle carried: operating instructions, warnings, and production and registration data. On a model they do a great deal of good, because they break up the flat expanse of paint and make the eye stop at a detail. It is by these that a model built with thought is recognized. How many inscriptions the sheet holds and how they are laid out is shown on the box and in the manufacturer's instructions.
Before you soak the sheet, check in the instructions whether it is a self-adhesive version: a self-adhesive film that has been soaked is ruined for good, whereas a waterslide decal can be soaked later as well. With the usual wet version, prepare the base to a gloss, because on a flat surface air stays trapped under the print and the edge turns white. Cut the inscription out close to the print, lay it in lukewarm water and let it release from the paper. Move it by sliding it, not by pulling on the print. Over rivets and edges a decal softener helps to press the print against the surface. Once dry, varnish the whole area so that the edge disappears.
