An accessory for modelers, not a kit of the vehicle. The set holds photo-etched parts in thin metal sheet that replace the thick plastic molding of the cooling fan cover and the adjoining grilles on the engine deck. The difference shows at once: a photo-etched grille has a realistic thickness and is see-through into the inside of the hull, which injection-molded plastic can never manage. The accessory is supplied by the SBS Model brand.
Sd.Kfz. 171 is the service designation of the German Panther medium tank of the Second World War. The Ausf. D version was the first production form of the type and differed from later versions in, among other things, the layout of the engine deck, the shape of the cooling fan covers and the design of the grilles over the radiators. Early and late examples moreover differed from one another, which is why accessories for this area are made in several variants.
Cut the photo-etched parts off on a hard surface with a sharp scalpel or with special scissors, not by breaking them out, or they will be deformed. Make the bends in a bending tool, or between two blades held up to the fold line. Degrease the sheet with alcohol before gluing, so that the primer holds. It is glued with cyanoacrylate applied with a pin in a minimal amount; on larger surfaces two-part epoxy is safer. Apply a metal primer to the metal, otherwise the finish will peel while you handle it. The original plastic parts on the model have to be sanded flush before the photo-etch is fitted.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and is not a model in its own right. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package. Please check the fit with your kit before buying.
