This item is not a kit but a detail accessory for diorama builders. It holds twenty photo-etched insulators of the long-stem type, that is, with an extended stem for fixing to a bracket, a crossarm or into a wall. A longer stem matches insulators that have to set the conductor further away from the supporting structure, for example on a line at the head of a pole or on wall brackets. The manufacturer is the Polish firm Aber, a specialist in photo-etched and turned metal accessories.
In a diorama insulators are the small thing that decides how believable a scene is. A pole fitted with insulators and strung conductors gives a vignette both scale and direction and ties the separate parts of a scene together. Twenty pieces are enough for several poles, or for a combination of poles and wall brackets. The set combines naturally with other photo-etched accessories for a diorama, for example with construction sections or with photo-etched vegetation in the same scale.
Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and sand the burrs away. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue; on small parts the gel version helps, together with a toothpick or tweezers with fine tips. Degrease the brass before painting and spray it with a primer for metal. Porcelain insulators tend to be white, light gray or brown, while glass is imitated with a translucent varnish toward blue-green. Add the strung conductors from thin thread and tint them dark gray so that they do not look glossy against the light.
The accessory is supplied as a photo-etched set, unpainted. Poles, conductors, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
