A pre-cut masking set for painting the wheels of the BT-2 tank. It covers the rubber tire band, so you can spray the rim in the base color of the vehicle and the tire band stays in the dark shade of rubber. The set is cut for the BT-2 kit from Hobby Boss — the diameters and shapes match the parts from that kit and need not fit wheels from another one.
The BT-2 stands on Christie suspension and its running gear is therefore very different from German machines of the same era. There are only four large road wheels with a strikingly wide rubber tire band on each side and no return rollers between them. The wheels are not covered by anything and the upper run of the track bears directly on them. The design allowed for road running without tracks, with the rear pair of wheels driving and the front pair steering, so the wheels are sturdy and their tire band is genuinely wide. For the modeler that means four large, clearly visible surfaces per side, where the border between rim and rubber is long and every hesitation of the hand is apparent at first glance. That is precisely why masking pays off on the BT-2 rather than lining the tire band with a brush.
The wheel of the BT-2 has a domed center, so a mask does not have an entirely flat surface. Lay it on dry, check the centering and only then press it down with a toothpick or a skewer from the center outwards — that drives out the air which would otherwise stay under the edge and make a path for the paint. Bleeding is most often caused by grease from your fingers: wash the parts in lukewarm water with dish soap before masking and let them dry. A proven trick against a bleeding edge is to spray a very thin coat of the color the tire band is to have over the mask once it is on; any penetration then sinks into its own shade and only afterwards do you spray the rim color.
Paints, glue and the kit are not included in the package.
