The photo-etched set from the Voyager Model brand replaces the fenders of the Soviet ZSU-57-2 anti-aircraft system in 1:35 scale. Plastic fenders are many times thicker than the scale calls for because of the mold; a metal replacement has a thickness close to reality and moreover allows a suggestion of the bending or damage that is common in photographs of machines in service. The set is cut for the Trumpeter 05559 kit; it need not fit other kits of the same vehicle, because they differ in the breakdown of the parts.
The ZSU-57-2 is a Soviet self-propelled anti-aircraft system of the 1950s. On a lightened chassis derived from the T-54 medium tank it carries an open rotating turret with a coupled pair of 57 mm automatic guns. The open roof of the turret made it easier to work the guns and to vent the propellant gases, but it did not protect the crew. The vehicle entered the armament of a number of states and lasted in service long after the end of its original role.
Separate the photo-etched parts with a scalpel or with photo-etch scissors on a hard surface, and make the bends in a photo-etch bender or between two blades, so that the edge is sharp and straight. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue, and more experienced modelers solder it. Before painting, degrease the metal and apply a primer intended for metal surfaces, otherwise the paint holds badly. Thin etched fenders will take a suggestion of bending and damage, which lends the model credibility. Cut the original plastic fenders off and level the surface before gluing the metal on. Assemble and paint the running gear before you lose access to it. An open turret means that the inside of it will be visible, so it pays to paint it before the surrounding structure is closed up. Earth-toned washes and pigments applied from the bottom upward suit the weathering.
