A set of masks for painting the road wheels of the Soviet T-34 medium tank in 1:35 scale, cut for the kit from Rye Field Model. This is not a kit or a part. Separate T-34 masks are cut for the kits of other manufacturers in parallel and they are not interchangeable with one another, because the wheels of the individual kits differ in size and in the shape of the rim — go by whose box you have before ordering.
The T-34 rides on Christie-type coil spring suspension and carries only a few road wheels of very large diameter on each side, with a strikingly large gap between the first and the second wheel. It has no return rollers; the upper run of the track is led over the tops of the road wheels. The rims are therefore large, solid and clearly visible, and the border between steel and rubber is the longest continuous circular line you will find on a tank — exactly what a hand-guided brush cannot hold. The second particularity of the T-34 is that types of wheel alternated during production: alongside the classic ones with a rubber tire band there were also all-steel wheels with no tire band, and both versions commonly appeared on one vehicle at the same time. Before you reach for the masks, then, go through the wheels of your kit and mask only those that really have a tire band.
A large wheel diameter is good news for masking: a mask is easy both to grip and to seat. Spike the wheel on a skewer pushed into polystyrene, lift a mask off the sheet with a needle, transfer it with fine-tipped tweezers and press it down around the circumference with a blunt toothpick. Do the checking through a magnifier with side light — on a long circular border an unseated stretch is told by its shadow. Since there are few wheels, the whole set can be managed in one sitting; that is precisely why you should spray them all at once and with the same number of passes, so the shade is uniform. If you plan to combine wheels with and without a tire band, separate the two groups into two rows at the very start, or you will mix them up halfway through.
