A masking set for painting the road wheels of the Russian T-90 tank. This is neither a kit nor replacement wheels — the masks cover the rim so the rubber tire band can be sprayed in a shade of its own with a sharp edge. The set is cut for the kit from Trumpeter, because the wheel diameters of the same subject differ between kit manufacturers.
The T-90 follows on from the T-72 design line and takes over its chassis as well: six large road wheels per side, a rim with pressed holes and a wide rubber tire band, with return rollers to go with them, the drive sprocket at the rear and the idler wheel at the front. The wheels are tall and fairly close together, so from the side they form an almost continuous row — the tire band then reads on the model as one long dark line, and any irregularity in its width disrupts that whole line at once. That is a difference from chassis where the wheels are separated and a mistake on one need not be visible. The front part of the running gear also tends to be covered by a rubber skirt, while the rear wheels stay more open, so the viewer's attention is drawn precisely to that exposed part.
Modern kits of this tank usually come with tracks assembled from links or with a link-and-length type track that is threaded tightly onto the wheels and shaped in wet glue. Once the track is seated, there is nothing more you can do with the wheels. The masking step therefore has to be closed out before you so much as touch the track: base coat, a day to cure, the masks and the tire bands, a check of every wheel in daylight — and only then the assembly of the tracks. Weathering and dust come to a finished running gear, when the sharp edge of the tire band is only softened, not created.
This is a masking accessory, not a model. The kit, paints and glue are not included in the package.
