A printed paper sheet intended as an accessory for dioramas in 1:35 scale. The flag motifs are cut out of the sheet and placed into a scene as a paper prop – so it is not a kit, nor a waterslide decal that would be applied to the surface of a model. The manufacturer is ETA diorama, which focuses exclusively on printed accessories for dioramas: posters, signs, maps, newspapers and similar small props.
A flag is an element of orientation in a diorama. It states quickly where the display takes place and gives the composition a vertical accent that is otherwise usually missing. Most often it is placed on a pole in front of a building, on an antenna or the side of a vehicle, above an entrance or on an improvised rod from drawn sprue. Paper has one practical advantage over a decal: it holds its shape. A fold once formed stays in it, so a flag can hang limply or fly in the wind, depending on the mood you want to give a scene.
Cut with a new scalpel blade along a steel rule – in 1:35 scale even a frayed edge is noticeable. Fold the flag over thin wire or a stretched thread and glue it with PVA glue applied in a thin layer; while the paper is damp, form the wave and let it dry in that shape. The white broken edge is masked with a thin stroke of a matching color around the perimeter. Aging is taken care of by fine abrasive paper on the edges, a thinned wash into the folds and a hint of pigment. At the end spray with matte clear coat – it unifies the sheen of the paper with the rest of the scene and increases the resistance to handling.
It is a printed paper accessory for a diorama, not a kit. Glue, paints and clear coat are not included in the package.
