A pair of castings in modeling resin in 1:35 scale from the maker CMK. It is not a kit of a craft but a figure accessory. The set differs from land figures in where it belongs: it works best on the deck of a small boat or on a shoreline base, that is in a setting where the surface is hard, flat and narrow.
That difference has practical consequences. The deck of a boat is smooth and will not let a figure be sunk into terrain the way it is commonly done with infantry on the ground; the feet have to seat exactly, otherwise a gap is visible under them. At the same time there is little room on a deck: plan both figures out dry, because once the first is glued on, the space for the second shrinks fundamentally. If you are placing the figures on a shoreline base, you can by contrast afford to sink the soles into the sand, which makes setting them up considerably easier. The figures are modeled for standing, not for a seat or a hatch.
Cut the casting blocks off with a fine-toothed saw and level the surface under the feet on abrasive paper on a flat board; with placement on a smooth deck this step is critical, because there is nothing there to cover a gap under a boot with. The parting line runs along the sides and across the gear; restore the sanded-away edges of the straps with a knife. Fill bubbles in the edges of a casting with thicker cyanoacrylate glue and sand them over before the base. Before painting, wash the parts in warm water with detergent because of the mold release agent. Cyanoacrylate glue, and on a deck it pays to anchor the figure with a short wire pin drilled through the sole. Sand with respiratory protection.
Dark gear is treacherous to paint: pure black swallows all the detail and the figure looks like a silhouette. Use a dark gray or gray-blue instead as a base and brighten the edges two tones higher, as only then is the division of the vest and the folds visible. Then add gloss purposefully only where a wet surface is to read, not over the whole area.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
