A set of five wooden road bollards in 1:35 scale from Matho Models. It is a diorama prop, not a kit of a model: miniatures of the classic bollards that lined the verges of roads and mountain tracks until plastic posts spread. It is exactly such a detail that gives a scene period credibility.
Wooden bollards belong in older and rural scenes, by field tracks, hairpin bends and the edges of villages. They work splendidly in dioramas from the middle of the 20th century, including scenes with equipment of the Second World War, but they will serve just as well in a civilian scene from between the wars or on a mountain lane. Place them at regular intervals along a road; a leaning or snapped piece by rutted wheel tracks tells a story of its own.
Historical bollards tended to be painted white, often with a dark (black) head or band so that they could be seen at dusk. So the base is white, which you then let get dirty at the foot with a brown wash and pigments; suggest chipping with a sponge and a dark color. The texture of the wood is supported by fine drybrushing in a lighter shade. Set the bollards into the terrain in predrilled holes and glue them with PVA or cyanoacrylate glue.
The accessory is supplied unpainted. Glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
