About product

A German armored grenadier with a G43 rifle, winter 1944/45, in 1:35 scale (Rado Miniatures)

A resin figure in 1:35 scale from Rado Miniatures. According to the name it is a single armored grenadier of a Waffen-SS unit in winter equipment, dated to the winter of 1944 to 1945 and armed with a G43 self-loading rifle. It is not a vehicle model but an accessory for models of equipment and for dioramas in the same scale. The singular in the name corresponds to a single figure.

Why a winter figure is a different job

A winter scene is the most demanding discipline in figure painting, because it means working with white. A white surface has no tone of its own from which a shadow could be made, so the volume has to be built up quite differently from a colored uniform: the base is never made pure white but slightly grayed or tinted toward blue, and white is left for the tops of the folds. The second difficulty is dirt. Winter clothing in the field never stayed clean, and an uneven, grubby surface is exactly what gives a figure its truth. A winter figure also has a heavier silhouette, so it works well beside a vehicle model even as the only figure.

Building and painting tips

Wash the casting in lukewarm soapy water, cut the casting block off with a fine saw and sand the area wet with respiratory protection. Spray on a primer, ideally in a gray shade, on which white is easier to build than on black. Work from the grayed base to the lightened edges and make the shadows with a very thin glaze of a cold tone. Add the soiling sparingly and only where it arises naturally: on the hem of the coat, on the knees, on the sleeves and on the footwear. Snow on the model is done right at the very end, after the matte varnish, most often with a mixture of modeling paste and white pigment. Paint the weapon separately before fitting it, as the stock and the barrel are hard to reach once glued.

Who the figure is for

  • Builders of winter dioramas in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers who want to try painting white winter clothing
  • Anyone interested in German equipment of the end of the Second World War
  • Those looking for a single striking figure to go with a vehicle model

The figure is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a resin casting. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

According to the singular in the name it is a single figure.

Never make the base pure white but slightly grayed or tinted toward blue, and leave pure white only for the tops of the folds. Build the shadows with a thin glaze of a cold tone.

Right at the very end, after the matte varnish. A mixture of modeling paste and white pigment is usually used, applied only where snow would naturally cling.

Yes. On smooth resin paint holds badly without a primer. On a winter figure a gray primer also pays off, as white is easier to build on it than on black.
