A set of resin figures in 1:35 scale from Rado Miniatures. According to the name these are armored grenadiers of Waffen-SS units in winter equipment, dated to the winter of 1944 to 1945. The plural in the name corresponds to a multi-figure set, unlike the individual figures of the same range. It is not a vehicle model but a set of figures for dioramas and for models of equipment in the same scale.
A set of several figures in identical winter clothing raises a different question from a single figure: how to keep them from looking like copies. The answer lies in the shade, not in the shape. Winter clothing in the field was worn and soiled to different degrees, so give each figure a slightly different base tone of white, a different degree of soiling at the hem and a different shade of trousers or equipment underneath. The differences have to be subtle, not colorful. The second thing is the arrangement: do not line the figures up in a row or in a regular triangle. Different heights, one figure crouched and one upright, give the group a rhythm and the viewer reads it as a situation rather than as figures on display.
Wash the castings in lukewarm soapy water, cut the casting blocks off with a fine saw and sand wet with respiratory protection. Reinforce the joints of the arms and heads with short wire pins. Spray on a primer; for a winter scene a gray one works well. Build the white from the grayed base to the lightened edges of the folds and make the shadows with a thin glaze of a cold tone, never with black. Paint the figures separately and place them on the base only when finished. Tie the group together at the end with the same dust or mud tone on the footwear and the lower part of the trousers. Apply the snow to the scene last of all, after the matte varnish.
The figures are supplied unassembled and unpainted, as resin castings. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
