A resin set of wheels for the plastic kit of the German Sd.Kfz.254 wheel-cum-track armored vehicle. This is not a model of the vehicle but an accessory. Unlike the sister set, this version is cast without deformation of the tire, that is with a regular circular outline. You thus gain a better surface, sharper rim detail and a cleaner tread pattern, without tying the model to one particular situation.
A flattened tire looks excellent on a parked, fully loaded vehicle. There are situations, however, where it gets in the way instead: a model in motion, a vehicle on a hardstand or on a flat display base, a transport scene where the vehicle stands on a flatcar, or simply a modeler who does not want to deal with the orientation of the flat spots on every wheel separately. In such cases a regular wheel is the right choice, and a resin casting still offers a markedly cleaner surface than a split plastic part with a seam across the middle of the tread.
The Sd.Kfz.254 was an armored observation vehicle with convertible running gear that could run on wheels as well as on lowering track units. The wheels are therefore not a marginal detail but a prominent element of the overall silhouette that is hard to hide on a model.
Wash the castings in lukewarm water with dish soap, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and level the surfaces. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). With regular wheels it pays to line the axle up precisely, otherwise the model looks crooked when viewed from the front. Paint the tire dark gray and, once it has dried, add a fine pigment into the tread pattern and pick the edges of the rim out with a dry brush. Because the optically weighting flat spot is missing here, the weathering has that much more of the impression to carry.
The accessory is supplied unpainted, as resin castings to be finished. The base kit, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
