About product

Heuschrecke IVb — fenders 1:35 (Voyager Model)

An add-on set of photo-etched fenders for a kit of the German Heuschrecke IVb prototype self-propelled gun, nicknamed the Grasshopper, in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit of the vehicle and not a finished model: it is an accessory for the Dragon 6439 kit, which the modeler obtains separately.

The real subject

The Heuschrecke IVb was a German prototype self-propelled gun of the Second World War, which remained in only a small number of trial vehicles and never reached series production. In design it was based on a chassis derived from the medium tanks, and its characteristic feature was a removable gun turret. Precisely because it was a vehicle built in minute numbers, it pays to keep the detail of a model as close to reality as possible.

Building and painting tips

Fenders are among the most rewarding photo-etched modifications of all: they are long, thin and highly visible parts, on which the difference from plastic is immediately noticeable. Before working, lay the sheet on a glass plate and check the flatness; flatten any slight ripple by running a smooth roller over it, never by bending it in your hand. Take the bends of the leading edges in a bending tool and press the sheet along the whole length at once, otherwise you will get a twisted edge. Cut the original plastic fenders off the kit and sand the surface flat. If you want to weather the vehicle, the fenders will take a slight bend and a folded corner, because unlike plastic metal does not crack. Degrease, lay on a thin primer and paint in thin coats, so that the edge stays crisp.

Who the set is for

  • Builders of German self-propelled guns in 1:35 scale
  • Modelers bothered by the thickness of plastic fenders
  • Anyone interested in prototypes and little-seen vehicles
  • Modelers with basic experience of working with photo-etched parts

An add-on set for a kit you already own, not a model kit. The kit, glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. The set holds only photo-etched fenders. The Dragon 6439 kit of the vehicle has to be obtained separately.

Yes. Cut them off and sand the surface flat, otherwise the new photo-etched parts will not seat.

Lay it on a glass plate and run a smooth roller over it. Straightening it by hand creates creases that can no longer be removed.
