About product

Schürzen for the Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.G of late production 1:35 (Voyager Model)

A photo-etched brass set, with which you replace the plastic side screens and their hangers while building with etched parts in the right thickness. The set does not hold a model in itself; it belongs on a finished or part-built kit of the Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.G tank in the late production fit. The dimensions and shapes stem from the Border 35001 kit.

The real subject

The Pz.Kpfw.IV Ausf.G was one of the later versions of the German medium tank of the period of the Second World War, armed with the long version of the 7.5 cm gun. The Schürzen side screens were thin steel plates hung on rails along the sides of the hull and around the turret. According to the regulations of the period they were to disrupt a hit before it landed on the armor proper. In service they were often bent, worked loose or missing altogether, so vehicles looked very varied in the field.

Why photo-etched parts instead of plastic

The real screens were very thin compared with the rest of the armor. Scaled down to 1:35 they come out as a foil, which injection-molded plastic cannot produce without the part deforming. Photo-etched brass holds that thickness and additionally allows the hanging rails, hooks and missing pieces to be depicted faithfully.

Work tips

Cut the parts out with a scalpel on a hard surface, not by snapping them off. Make the bends in a photo-etch bender, and on long rails along the whole length at once. Brass can be annealed briefly over a flame; once cool it is softer and shaped more easily, which comes in handy for dented and bent screens. Before painting, degrease the parts and lay on a primer meant for metal, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth brass. Glue with cyanoacrylate in small amounts applied with a pin.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who want genuinely thin side screens on their Pz.Kpfw.IV
  • Builders of dioramas with damaged or partly missing equipment on a vehicle
  • More experienced modelers with basic equipment for working with photo-etched parts

The set serves for reworking a kit you have already bought. The model, glue and paints are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is not. This is a photo-etched add-on set, which you use on a kit of the tank you have already bought. The model itself is not in the package.

A scalpel or photo-etch scissors, a hard surface, a photo-etch bender, tweezers, cyanoacrylate and a primer for metal. Without a bender the long rails will come out bent unevenly.

Only after preparation. Degrease the parts first and spray them with a primer meant for metal, and only then paint. On bare brass the paint rubs off during handling.

Yes, that is one of the advantages of metal. Brass can be bent, torn and partly removed, so the vehicle takes on a realistic look from the field.

The target kit is the Border 35001. The cut and the dimensions stem from it; with another mold the shapes may differ.
