A photo-etched accessory from the maker Voyager Model for a model of the British Sherman VC Firefly tank in 1:35 scale. It is not a kit but a set of parts for improving a model you already have. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package.
The covers over the tracks are of thin sheet on the real vehicle, which bends and dents in service and often has a whole piece of it missing. That thickness cannot be imitated in injection-molded plastic; a part always comes out noticeably thicker and the edges look blunt. Photo-etched sheet can be bent exactly where you want, and on this type of vehicle in particular an irregularly bent cover is one of the most striking features a viewer notices on a finished model.
The Sherman VC Firefly was a British conversion of the American Sherman, into whose turret a powerful 17-pounder anti-tank gun was fitted. Because of the length of the weapon and a different stowage of ammunition, the vehicle differs from a standard Sherman in a number of details. It is precisely with conversions of this kind that it makes sense to pay attention to the external sheet-metal parts, because in period photographs they tend to be markedly worn.
Separate the parts with a sharp scalpel on a hard surface and sand the remains of the tabs back. Long straight bends are well handled by a photo-etch bender; otherwise help yourself with two metal rulers. Shape the deformations carefully and gradually; the sheet can be drawn over only once. Degrease the surfaces with alcohol before gluing. Glue with cyanoacrylate glue applied with a toothpick and use a base coat intended for metal before painting, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface.
The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base model. Glue, paints and tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
