Self-adhesive stencils for spraying the camouflage finish onto a model of the mobile workshop on the chassis of the ZiL-131 off-road truck. These are not canopy masks but stencils that define the shape of the color areas on the body and the box body. They are laid onto a dry base coat and a further shade is sprayed through them. The target kit is ICM.
A box body gives a mask an ideal base: broad flat walls with no rivets and no curves. Yet that is exactly where the mistake is made most often, because a large piece of film lays down badly and air bubbles are easily left under it. So lay the stencil on by one edge first, hold it, and only then press it down step by step from the center toward the edges. The air then has somewhere to escape. A bubble that appears even so should be pierced with the tip of a scalpel and pressed over; do not pull the mask back.
A mask holds best on a smooth, well-dried base. A coat of matte paint has a microscopically rough surface that lowers the adhesion of the edge and raises the risk of paint creeping under. If the base shade is markedly matte, it pays to go over the area with a thin layer of smooth clear coat before masking and let it cure. A fresh coat that is not yet completely dry, on the other hand, may be torn away by the mask when it is lifted. Before applying, check that there is no grease and no sanding dust on the surface.
The stencils are a modeling accessory. The kit, the paints and the clear coat are not included in the package.
