A masking set for painting the road wheels of the Chinese ZTZ96B tank in 1:35 scale. This is not a model or a set of replacement parts: the masks stick onto finished wheels and hold a sharp edge between the rubber tire band and the rim while spraying. The set is cut for the ZTZ96B kit from Meng.
The ZTZ96B carries a running gear with torsion bar springing and six road wheels on each side; the upper run of the track travels over return rollers, so a characteristic gap is left between the wheels and the upper edge of the running gear. The wheels have rubber tire bands and a rim with lightening holes, whose pattern reads well from the side. The essential point is that the running gear is partly covered by side plates: from above you see only part of a wheel, while from below the whole arc is exposed. Anyone who concludes from that that the painting can be skimped will come off badly — in a case the model is examined from below as well as from the side, and inconsistent rubber catches the eye exactly where the plates end. At the same time all the road wheels are identical, so the masks are interchangeable between them and the work goes quickly.
With modern equipment on a smooth, well sprayed base it pays to give thought to what you are sticking the mask onto. On a base of good primer and an even finish a mask seats precisely and paint will not bleed under it, whereas on a rough or dusty surface it will not. Prime the wheels before masking, therefore, as carefully as the hull. Choose a medium-dark rubber shade with a hint of cool; too rich a black beside the lighter Chinese camouflage looks as though it were cut out of paper. Lay the paint on in two thin coats and give the last coat time before you take the mask off — with harder acrylics the difference between fifteen minutes and an hour of drying is visible at the edge of the mask. Finish matte.
