This is a diorama accessory, not a model of a submarine. The base is a casting with a shaped sea surface into which a finished model of a submarine is seated so that it looks as though it were under way. The manufacturer Hobby Fan comes from Taiwan and specializes in resin accessories, so expect a casting in resin, not injection molded plastic. The base is prepared for a model of a submarine in 1:350 scale, but the model itself is not included and is bought separately.
A submarine on a bare stand looks like a technical exhibit. But as soon as you seat it in a surface with waves, a bow wave at the stem and a wake behind the conning tower, the whole impression of a display case changes and the model gains both scale and movement. That is precisely why wave bases have become a popular way of presenting models of submarines and surface ships. This base is shaped for an American submarine of the postwar GUPPY modernization line, whose hulls were built during the Second World War and were later rebuilt for longer voyages below the surface.
First wash the resin casting with lukewarm water and dish soap to remove residues of mold release agent, otherwise the paint will not hold. Cut off any casting block with a saw and sand the area; while sanding resin, protect your airways and work wet. Paint the surface in layers: a darker base in the hollows, a lighter tone on the crests of the waves and finally white foam only on the very tips and in the wake. Transparency and a wet appearance are achieved by going over it with a gloss clear coat or a gel medium, in two or three layers if you like. Seat the model of the submarine into the base dry first, check the fit and only then glue it with cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy; fill the gap along the axis of the hull with gel and paint over it.
The package contains the base only. The model of the submarine, the paints, the glue and the gloss media are not included, unless stated otherwise.
