About product

Turned 20 mm L/65 C/38 barrels, 20 pieces, 1:400 — Aber

The box holds twenty turned metal barrels for the light 20 mm anti-aircraft gun of the C/38 type with an L/65 barrel, in 1:400 scale. It is a detail accessory for models of German warships, not a standalone model. Light anti-aircraft armament is among the most noticeable features of a ship's superstructure, and it is exactly there that plastic barrels leave the biggest mark on the overall impression in a small scale, because they tend to be too thick and to carry a visible mold seam.

The real subject

The 20 mm C/38 gun was the main light anti-aircraft weapon of the Kriegsmarine from the end of the 1930s. It was deployed in single mountings as well as in a quadruple arrangement, which appeared on battleships, cruisers, destroyers and submarines. Unlike the older C/30 type it had a higher practical rate of fire, and over the course of the war the numbers of these weapons on individual ships rose considerably, so the set suits late configurations as well.

Building and painting tips

Cut off the plastic barrels as close to the carriage as possible and carefully drill the hole left behind to the diameter of the pin on the metal part. Degrease the metal with alcohol before gluing and roughen the mating surface slightly, then glue it with cyanoacrylate glue in small drops. In 1:400 scale the parts are very small, so tweezers, a light-colored mat and working over a box all pay off, so that a barrel does not get lost. Paint only once a base coat intended for metal is down, otherwise the paint will not hold on the smooth surface.

Who the set is for

  • A replacement for the plastic barrels on models of German warships
  • A finer profile and a hollow muzzle against injection-molded plastic
  • A detail accessory, not a complete model of a ship

This is a detail accessory for your own model, not a complete kit of a ship. Glue, paints and the base model are not included in the package.

FAQ

Twenty turned metal barrels of 20 mm caliber meant to replace the plastic parts.

Yes. The numbers of light 20 mm anti-aircraft guns rose during the war, so the set covers the added armament too.

Tweezers, a sharp scalpel and cyanoacrylate glue are enough. Given the size of the parts, a magnifier helps as well.

No, it is an accessory to a model you already have.
