The subject is the guided missile destroyer Atago of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force, and the addition in the name identifies the configuration of the ship as she was in 2017. The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted.
Atago is the lead unit of the class of guided missile destroyers of the same name in the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force. The ships of this class are fitted with the Aegis combat system with its large flat antennas on the superstructure, vertical launch cells and a landing area with a hangar for a helicopter aft. Against the earlier units they have a lengthened stern and a taller superstructure, which is clearly noticeable on a model. The reference to her state in 2017 matters for a modeler: the configuration of sensors, armament and superstructure on ships in active service changes over time, so the year defines a particular appearance of the subject.
In 1:450 scale clean work is the key: the parts are small, so cut them off carefully and glue with thin cement for plastic in the smallest amount. Paint the hull and the superstructure in the base gray shade before assembly, and mask and spray the decks separately. Fine details such as the radars, the masts and the railings will take a fine brush; if you reach for photo-etched accessories from another manufacturer, check beforehand that they are intended for this scale. The model looks good on a simple stand or on a water surface made from acrylic gel. Choose the weathering sparingly; on modern ships a gentle accent on the panels and a hint of streaking below the hawse holes is enough.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
